An Interaction Continuum for 3D Data Visualization

Résumé de la thèse:
The work presented in this thesis focuses on the 3D manipulations needed for visualization. Visualization of 3D datasets requires at least 6 degrees of freedom for usual 3D manipulations as well as specific interaction techniques for specific tasks. Building on the conclusion that more and more devices and interaction mediums are available and useful for such 3D visualizaton tasks but are almost never combined, this thesis proposed to study how different input strategies could be combined in order to create an interaction continuum for visualization. In particular, the thesis focuses on the very widespread tactile interaction and the possibility to combine it with the real-world mimicking tangible interaction. The benefits of such combinations are evaluated through controlled experiments with casual users or specific scientific domain experts. This thesis hence highlights the great potential of hybrid interaction paradigms for casual use as well as for visualization purposes.
