Abstract: This paper describes our Statistical Machine Translation systems for the WMT09 (en:fr) shared task. For this evaluation, we have developed four systems, using two different MT Toolkits: our primary submission, in both directions, is based on Moses, boosted with contextual information on phrases, and is contrasted with a conventional Moses-based system. Additional contrasts are based on the Ncode toolkit, one of which uses (part of) the English/French GigaWord parallel corpus.

Abstract: While the public has increasingly access to medical information, specialized medical language is often difficult for non-experts to understand and there is a need to bridge the gap between specialized language and lay language. As a first step towards this end, we describe here a method to build a comparable corpus of expert and non-expert medical French documents and to identify similar text segments of lay and specialized language. Among the top 400 pairs of text segments retrieved with this method, 59% were actually similar and 37% were deemed exploitable for further processing. This is encouraging evidence for the target task of finding equivalent expressions between these two varieties of language.

Abstract: Developing international multilingual terminologies is a time-consuming process. We present a methodology which aims to ease this process by automatically acquiring new translations of medical terms based on word alignment in parallel text corpora, and test it on English and French. After collecting a parallel, English-French corpus, we detected French translations of English terms from three terminologies-MeSH, SNOMED CT and the MedlinePlus Health Topics. We obtained respectively for each terminology 74.8 77.8% and 76.3% of linguistically correct new translations. A sample of the MeSH translations was submitted to expert review and 61.5% were deemed desirable additions to the French MeSH. In conclusion, we successfully obtained good quality new translations, which underlines the suitability of using alignment in text corpora to help translating terminologies. Our method may be applied to different European languages and provides a methodological framework that may be used with different processing tools.

Deleger_IJMI2009 Deléger, L.; Namer, F. & Zweigenbaum, P. Morphosemantic parsing of medical compound words: transferring a French analyzer to English. 2009 Int J Med Inform
    Vol. 78 Suppl 1 , pp. S48-S55
    article terminology as topic; translating
Abstract: PURPOSE: Medical language, as many technical languages, is rich with morphologically complex words, many of which take their roots in Greek and Latin--in which case they are called neoclassical compounds. Morphosemantic analysis can help generate definitions of such words. The similarity of structure of those compounds in several European languages has also been observed, which seems to indicate that a same linguistic analysis could be applied to neo-classical compounds from different languages with minor modifications. METHODS: This paper reports work on the adaptation of a morphosemantic analyzer dedicated to French (DériF) to analyze English medical neo-classical compounds. It presents the principles of this transposition and its current performance. RESULTS: The analyzer was tested on a set of 1299 compounds extracted from the WHO-ART terminology. 859 could be decomposed and defined, 675 of which successfully. CONCLUSION: An advantage of this process is that complex linguistic analyses designed for French could be successfully transposed to the analysis of English medical neoclassical compounds, which confirmed our hypothesis of transferability. The fact that the method was successfully applied to a Germanic language such as English suggests that performances would be at least as high if experimenting with Romance languages such as Spanish. Finally, the resulting system can produce more complete analyses of English medical compounds than existing systems, including a hierarchical decomposition and semantic gloss of each word.

Abstract: This position paper argues for an interactive approach to text understanding. The proposed model extends an existing semantics-based text authoring system by using the input text as a source of information to assist the user in re-authoring its content. The approach permits a reliable deep semantic analysis by combining automatic information extraction with a minimal amount of human intervention.

Abstract: In this paper we study the interrogation in Human-Computer Dialogue in order to integrate interpretative and dynamic functionnalities in a Question-Answering system using Interactive Grammar. It constitues a direct link between question and answer and assumes that the morphosyntax of interrogation depends on an anticipated answer. We propose an observation of question-answering corpora coming from the RITEL system showing the distribution of different morphosyntatic kinds of questions. Then we present an experimentation based on this observation in which French native speakers answer to those different kinds of questions. Our objective is to observe the difference between the anticipated answer and the effective one.

Situated within the domain of interactive question-answering, our work is to increase the naturalness of natural language answers. This paper presents an experiment aiming at observing the formulation of answers by French speakers. The system asked simple questions to which the humans had to answer. Two modalities were used : text (web) and speech (phone). We present and analyze the collected corpus. Within the large variability of answer forms in French, we point some links between the answer form and the question form. Moreover we present a preliminary study on the observed variation between modalities. We expect these results to be integrable in existing systems to dynamically produce adpated natural language answers.

Abstract: The Quantitative Kidney DataBase (QKDB) is a relational database that was created in order to centralize kidney-related experimental results. Each result is characterized by different attributes and the scientific paper from which it was extracted. Currently, this database is populated by hand by experts of the domain. We present a corpus study of some papers that have already been analyzed in order to exhibit the specificities and difficulties of the extraction process; then we propose a first solution to extract automatically the desired knowledge from papers.

Abstract: Recent renewed interest in de-identification (also known as "anonymisation") has led to the development of a series of systems in the United States with very good performance on challenge test sets. De-identification needs however to be tuned to the local documents and their specificities. We address here two issues raised in this context. First, tuning is generally performed by language engineers who should not have to work on identified text. We therefore perform a first gross de-identification step in the hospital. Second, to set up a de-identification system for new documents in a language different from English, here French patient reports, we tested two methods: the first attempts to adapt an existing US de-identifier for English, the second re-develops a new system which applies the same methods. The first method involved localizing patterns designed for English, which proved cumbersome and did not quickly obtain good performance. With a similar effort, the latter method obtained much better results. Evaluated on a set of 23 randomly selected texts from a corpus of 21,749 clinical texts, it obtained 83% recall and 92% precision.

Abstract: The integration of virtual agents in real-time interactive virtual applications raises several challenges. The rendering of the movements of the virtual character in the virtual scene (locomotion of the character or rotation of its head) and the binaural rendering in 3D of the synthetic speech during these movements need to be spatially coordinated. Furthermore, the system must enable real-time adaptation of the agent´s expressive audiovisual signals to user´s on-going actions. In this paper, we describe a platform that we have designed to address these challenges as follows: (1) the modules enabling real time synthesis and spatial rendering of the synthetic speech, (2) the modules enabling 3D real time rendering of facial expressions using a GPU-based 3D graphic engine, and (3) the integration of these modules within an experimental platform using gesture as an input modality. A new model of phoneme-dependent human speech directivity patterns is included in the speech synthesis system, so that the agent can move in the virtual scene with realistic 3D visual and audio rendering. Future applications of this platform include perceptual studies about multimodal perception and interaction, expressive real time question and answer system and interactive arts.

Abstract: This paper reports on the ACQA (Animated agent for Conversational Question Answering) project conducted at LIMSI. The aim is to design an expressive animated conversational agent (ACA) for conducting research along two main lines: 1/ perceptual experiments (eg perception of expressivity and 3D movements in both audio and visual channels): 2/ design of human-computer interfaces requiring head models at different resolutions and the integration of the talking head in virtual scenes. The target application of this expressive ACA is a real-time question and answer speech based system developed at LIMSI (RITEL). The architecture of the system is based on distributed modules exchanging messages through a network protocol. The main components of the system are: RITEL a question and answer system searching raw text, which is able to produce a text (the answer) and attitudinal information; this attitudinal information is then processed for delivering expressive tags; the text is converted into phoneme, viseme, and prosodic descriptions. Audio speech is generated by the LIMSI selection-concatenation text-to-speech engine. Visual speech is using MPEG4 keypoint-based animation, and is rendered in real-time by Virtual Choreographer (VirChor), a GPU-based 3D engine. Finally, visual and audio speech is played in a 3D audio and visual scene. The project also puts a lot of effort for realistic visual and audio 3D rendering. A new model of phoneme-dependant human radiation patterns is included in the speech synthesis system, so that the ACA can move in the virtual scene with realistic 3D visual and audio rendering.

Abstract: The ability to generate or to recognize paraphrases is key to the vast majority of NLP applications. As correctly exploiting context during translation has been shown to be successful, using context information for paraphrasing could also lead to improved performance. In this article, we adopt the pivot approach based on parallel multilingual corpora proposed by (Bannard and Callison-Burch, 2005), which finds short paraphrases by finding appropriate pivot phrases in one or several auxiliary languages and back-translating these pivot phrases into the original language. We show how context can be exploited both when attempting to find pivot phrases, and when looking for the most appropriate paraphrase in the original sub-sentential ``envelope. This framework allows the use of paraphrasing units ranging from words to large sub-sentential fragments for which context information from the sentence can be successfully exploited. We report experiments on a text revision task, and show that in these experiments our contextual sub-sentential paraphrasing system outperforms a strong baseline system.

Abstract: In this article, we present a framework for obtaining rephrasings for short text spans. Good candidates include paraphrases, but also more generally phrases that could help a writer revise a text with some shifts in meaning. The presented framework uses as its knowledge source bilingual aligned phrases learnt from parallel corpora. We present several models for selecting rephrasings, and we evaluate the selection power of candidate rephrasings on grammaticality, meaning preservation and authoring value. The approach is then discussed and future work is described.

Abstract: This paper advocates an approach whereby the needs of language-impaired readers are taken into account at the stage of text authoring by means of NLP integration. In our proposed system architecture, a simplification module produces candidate simplified rephrasings that the author of the text can accept or edit. This article describes the syntactic simplification module which has been partly implemented. We believe the proposed approach constitutes a framework for the more general task of authoring NLP-enriched documents obtained through validations from the author.

    article

Abstract: This paper presents an approach to normalize documents in constrained domains. This approach reuses resources developed for controlled document authoring and is decomposed into three phases. First, candidate content representations for an input document are automatically built. Then, the content representation that best corresponds to the document according to an expert of the class of documents is identified. This content representation is finally used to generate the normalized version of the document. The current version of our prototype system is presented, and its limitations are discussed.

Abstract: Document normalization is an interactive process that transforms raw legacy documents into semantically well-formed and linguistically controlled documents with the same communicative intention content. A paradigm for content analysis has been implemented to select candidate semantic representations of the communicative content of an input document. This implementation reuses the formal content specification of a multilingual controlled authoring system. As a consequence, a candidate semantic representation can not only be associated with a text in the language of the input document, but also in all the languages supported by the system. This paper presents how multilingual versions of an input legacy document can be obtained interactively with a proposed implementation, and discusses the advantages and limitations of this kind of normalizing translation.

Abstract: Recent research has shown the importance of using source context information to disambiguate source phrases in phrase-based Statistical Machine Translation. Although encouraging results have been obtained, those only concern translation pairs with a low inflected target language. In this article, we present an attempt at using source context information to translate from English to French based on memory-based classifiers for estimating context-dependent phrasal translation probabilities. In addition to information from the immediate context of a source phrase, grammatical dependency targets outside of the phrase are also considered. While automatic evaluation results do not show significant improvements, a manual evaluation provides evidence that context-aware systems also perform better than baseline systems for such a translation language pair, and that systems integrating grammatical dependency information perform at least as well or slightly better for the data used than systems that do not use such information.

Abstract: Rephrasing text spans is a common task when revising a text. However, traditional dictionaries often cannot provide direct assistance to writers in performing this task. In this article, we describe an approach to obtain a monolingual phrase lexicon using techniques used in Statistical Machine Translation. A phrase to be rephrased is first translated into a pivot language, and then translated back into the original language. Models for assessing fluency, meaning preservation and lexical divergence are used to rank possible rephrasings, and their relative weight can be tuned by the user so as to better address her needs. An evaluation shows that these models can be used successfully to select rephrasings that are deemed useful to a writer.

Abstract: The Ritel project aims at integrating spoken language dialog and open-domain information retrieval to allow a human to ask general questions (e.g. Who is currently presiding the French Senate?) and refine her search interactively. This project is at the junction of several distinct research communities, and has therefore several challenges to tackle: real-time streamed speech recognition with very large vocabulary, open-domain dialog management, fast information retrieval from text, query cobuilding, communication between information retrieval and dialog components, and generation of natural sounding answers. In this paper, we present our work on the different components of Ritel, and provide initial results.

    article
Abstract: One of the basic topics of QA dialogue systems is how follow-up questions should be interpreted by a QA system. In this paper, we shall discuss our experience with the IMIX and Ritel systems, for both of which a follow-up question handling scheme has been developed, and corpora have been collected. These two systems are each other's opposites in many respects: IMIX is multimodal, non-factoid, black-box QA, while Ritel is speech, factoid, keyword-based QA. Nevertheless, we will show that they are quite comparable, and it is fruitful to examine the similarities and differences. We shall look at how the systems are composed, and how real, non-expert, users interact with the systems. We shall also provide comparisons with systems from the literature where possible, and indicate where open issues lie and in what areas existing systems may be improved. We conclude that most systems have a common architecture with a set of common subtasks, in particular detecting follow-up questions and finding referents for them. We characterise these tasks using the typical techniques used for performing them, and data from our corpora. We also identify a special type of follow-up question, the discourse question, which is asked when the user is trying to understand an answer, and propose some basic methods for handling it.

Abstract: The Ritel system aims to provide open-domain question answering to casual users by means of a telephone dialogue. This implies some unique challenges, such as very fast overall performance and large-vocabulary speech recognition. Speech QA is an error-prone process, but errors or problems that occur may be resolved with help of user feedback, as part of a natural dialogue. This paper reports on a pilot study conducted with the latest version of Ritel, which includes search term confirmation and improved follow-up question handling, as well as various improvements on the other system components. We collected a small dialogue corpus with the new system, which we use to evaluate and discuss it.

Abstract: This paper presents a coarticulation-modeling project in French Sign Language (LSF). We briefly introduce what sign language is about and why we study a specific part of it: to coarticulate isolated signs in order to create parameterized utterances. Then we explain what coarticulation means and how it has been studied in several research fields. We describe the methodology we have set up to reach our goal: creation of sign corpora, annotations of these corpora, analysis of these annotations, and finally design of a coarticulation model. Abstract: This article proposes a methodology to study coarticulation in sign language. Our aim is to provide information in sign language (SL) thanks to a displayed signing avatar performing SL predefined animations. Therefore, we explain the approach we have chosen to model coarticulation, and animate our avatar. We also propose a definition of what coarticulation is, based on an overview of the literature, and we present the linguistic basis our model will be build on. We explain the methodology we are setting up, based on corpus analysis, and our evaluation protocol. We are aware of the various implications our study will have on several aspects for the deaf community and the SL.

Abstract: We present a methodology to build 3D French sign language (LSF) corpus of lexicon. These signs will be used in various software dealing with signing avatar. One software we are developing is a display information system in a railway station, to provide as information to deaf travellers as the hearing can get. Another one is a Web dictionary of LSF lexicon with particular entry ways. The third software is a LSF translation on our laboratory's Web site to provide accessibility for deaf users. Our aim is to build a set of signs so that one sign can be used in each software listed. In order to create this 3D LSF corpus lexicon, we set up a new methodology. We propose four steps to ensure the quality of the result: selection of the participants, meetings to elaborate the lexicon, elaboration of the video corpus that will be used for the 3D conception, creation of the 3D corpus by means of 3D software. We suggest the participation of the end-users from the corpus conception, the participation of experts and specialists for the corpus content, and a multi-level evaluation (on technical, use, ergonomic and linguistic sides) of the result. Finally we present which step we have achieved in each of our software project.

Abstract: The RITEL project aims to integrate a spoken language dialogue system and an open-domain information retrieval system in order to enable human users to ask a general question and to refine their search for information interactively. This type of system is often referred to as an Interactive Question Answering (IQA) system. In this paper, we present an evaluation of how the performance of the RITEL system differs when users interact with it using spoken versus textual input and output. Our results indicate that while users do not perceive the two versions to perform significantly differently, many more questions are asked in a typical text-based dialogue.

Abstract: It is now almost 15 years since the publication of the first paper on text mining in the genomics domain, and decades since the first paper on text mining in the medical domain. Enormous progress has been made in the areas of information retrieval, evaluation methodologies and resource construction. Some problems, such as abbreviation-handling, can essentially be considered solved problems, and others, such as identification of gene mentions in text, seem likely to be solved soon. However, a number of problems at the frontiers of biomedical text mining continue to present interesting challenges and opportunities for great improvements and interesting research. In this article we review the current state of the art in biomedical text mining or 'BioNLP' in general, focusing primarily on papers published within the past year.
